Can you really train your voice?

Absolutely! Learning to sing is just like learning any other skill. It takes time and repeated right action.

Practice is a big part of a singers success. But, don’t fall victim to a famous old saying – Practice does NOT make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

If you practice in an optimal way, you’ll develop healthy vocal technique and ultimately sound better. But practicing the wrong thing makes bad habits that much stronger and harder to get over.

That said, you can definitely learn to sing. It’s just a factor of whether or not you’re practicing the right things to get the results you want.

Do Singing Lessons Really Work?

For sure – if you’re being taught the right things for your voice.

That’s why getting a teacher who is knowledgeable about not just singing, but how to teach singing is so important.

With the right teacher, you can make tremendous strides vocally. And this isn’t just limited to vocal technique. A great teacher can help you with style, storytelling, performing, and more!

That said, the first steps in developing the voice are all about finding a voice teacher that’s the right fit for you.

A good teacher helps their students build confidence in their voice, whether they’re singing exercises, songs, or higher notes.

At the same time, they also help their students have fun learning music!

Online Singing Lessons

One of the main questions we get is do private singing lessons online actually work? The answer is usually.

When online lessons are a bad idea…

If either you or your coach do not have access to high speed internet, online lessons isn’t a good idea.

Also, you want to be sure to find a coach who has experience and is comfortable teaching online. Teaching vocals online is a bit of a different skill set that not many teachers have yet, but fortunately that number is growing.

Likewise, child who struggles to focus benefits less from online classes.

The only other time taking a singing lesson online is a bad idea is if you still struggle with pitch control. It’s much easier practicing singing on key in person. Once you learn to sing in tune, you’ll be ready for online lessons.

When online lessons are a good idea…

If you’ve high speed internet and are working with a vocal teacher who is familiar with teaching online, you’re good to go!

Online lessons are super convenient because they take place in your own home. This mean it’s easier to work these lessons into your schedule, and ultimately save you time because there’s no commute involved.

Heck, you can easily have singing lessons at home in New York, San Francisco… anywhere! And work with a vocal coach on the other side of the world! Technology is an amazing thing!

What's Required for Online Voice Lessons?

Not much. Most people are able to get started using equipment that they already have.

You can use your smartphone or tablet for lessons, or most computers with a webcam. Beyond that, all you need is high speed internet.

You definitely don’t need any special microphone setup or recording equipment. But if you already have it, it doesn’t hurt.

We teach via on Skype for most of our lessons. Zoom is also an option for people who want flexibility with more complex audio routing (If that sounds weird, don’t worry. Just know Skype is best for you 😉

But that’s about it. All you need to do is make sure Skype is downloaded to the device before your lesson, and be ready to work on your vocal skills once your scheduled time arrives.

Are Vocal Lessons Worth It?

They definitely can be. If you find the right teacher, they will make sure you succeed.

That said, progressing in singing is a matter of practice and effort. Working with an instructor doesn’t mean you’ll sound like {insert your favorite singer here} in a month.

Progress depends on where you want to go as well as your present skill level. To be a better singer, your voice must be developed at your own pace.

For example, if your goal is to sound better, and you practice the suggestions and feedback given to you by your singing teacher regularly, you’ll achieve that goal in no time.

However, if you want your vocal coach to expand your vocal range and assign you the musical theater song “Defying Gravity,” it’s going to take more than just one online lesson to prevent that likely voice break.

That’s neither good nor bad, but expectations play into whether or not it’s worth it. Our voice teachers are great at helping you along your vocal journey, but it does take practice, effort, and time to get major results.

But when you apply what you learn, and practice enough to establish new, better habits, you’ll be reaching your potential in no time.

How much do voice lessons usually cost?

The cost of taking lessons varies considerably depending on where you live, the quality of the teacher, and how many lessons you take. But that said, let’s talk money.

The national average cost for private voice instruction is roughly $1/minute, and most lessons are roughly an hour long. Often times, 30 minute lessons are available, but this often comes with a mark up. Voice classes can be less, but time is shared between others, so it’s harder to pay attention.

Our coaches start off at $135/month for a 30 min lesson each week, or $225/month for a 55 minute lesson each week.

Naturally, the cost, of lessons with our intermediate and advanced coaches with higher demand are definitely more and often times have waiting lists.
